How to Get Shit Done — Navigating the Massive Shortage of Doers
In a world filled with big dreams and endless brainstorming sessions, the real MVPs are the doers — the ones who not only talk the talk but walk the walk. Unfortunately, they’re becoming as rare as a quiet Zoom meeting.
I remember back when I was starting Blink Launch, my software consulting company. The idea was exciting, but turning it into reality required relentless hustle. Many friends loved the concept but were hesitant to join in. It highlighted a common trend — lots of dreamers, not enough doers.
It’s time to tackle this head-on. How can we become true doers and get things done amidst this shortage of action-takers? Let’s dive in with some practical tips, I figured out going through my own journey:
1. Prioritise Ruthlessly
Imagine waking up each morning with a clear sense of purpose. You immediately pinpoint the two most critical tasks that will move your goals forward. This intentional approach to prioritization ensures that even on the busiest days, you’re making progress where it matters most.
2. Set Clear Goals
When I started Blink Launch, setting clear milestones was key to charting our path to success. One milestone was landing five clients within three months. To achieve this, I broke it down into actionable steps: crafting personalized outreach strategies, networking diligently, and delivering exceptional value. The result? We secured our fifth client in just two months, exceeding our own expectations.
3. Overcome Procrastination
Even the most motivated folks struggle with procrastination. To combat this, I swear by the Pomodoro Technique. Set a timer for 25 minutes, dive into your task, and take short breaks in between. It’s a game-changer for minimizing distractions.
4. Embrace Imperfect Action
My first software product taught me the value of imperfect action. Instead of waiting for perfection, I launched an MVP and gathered user feedback. Iterating based on that feedback, I turned it into a success story.
5. Accountability and Commitment
Sharing your goals with a trusted friend or mentor can be a game-changer. When you have someone holding you accountable, it keeps you focused and committed to making steady progress. This mutual support system can be invaluable on your journey as a doer.
6. Limit Distractions
Balancing work and life, I dedicate specific hours to deep work. During these times, I turn off non-essential notifications and close unnecessary tabs, creating a distraction-free zone.
7. Continuous Learning and Adaptation
In the fast-paced tech industry, staying ahead means constantly learning and adapting. I make it a point to attend webinars, read industry blogs, and experiment with new tools. This commitment to ongoing education ensures that I remain at the forefront of innovation and best practices.
8. Celebrate Small Wins
Every milestone, no matter how small, deserves recognition. Whether it’s closing a deal, mastering a new skill, or reaching a project milestone, celebrating these wins fuels motivation and instills a sense of accomplishment. It’s these small victories that keep us inspired and hungry for more.
So, fellow people, let’s commit to being doers. By prioritizing, setting clear goals, and taking imperfect action, we can overcome the shortage of doers and turn our dreams into reality. The world is waiting for our ideas — let’s go out there and make them happen!
Cheers to getting things done.
